Key Findings

Integrated Performance Systems and Key Performance Dimensions: Using best practice research findings, the Best Practices, LLC research team identified key performance dimensions or sub-elements that are cornerstones of the integrated management system. The key performance dimensions include:

    1. Link Best Practices to Strategy Fulfillment

    2. Best Practice Identification Systems

    3. Best Practice Recognition Systems

    4. Communicating Best Practices

    5. Best Practice Knowledge Sharing Systems

    6. Ongoing Nurturing of Best Practices

Graphical Presentations, Best Practice Project Maps and Research Organization: The sub-elements to the fully integrated performance system are graphically depicted at the start of the report. At the start of each chapter, a Best Practice Project Map describes: (1) the class of benchmark companies examined in the chapter, (2) the key performance dimensions of the project with the chapter concentration highlighted, and (3) the recommended practices identified among the benchmark class in that sub-element.

Best Practice Corporate Profiles, Information Graphics: Best practice descriptions and information are organized and presented under the thematic headings or sub-elements for each performance system. Highly effective practices are identified in bold-faced type and are followed by detailed descriptions of individual companies specific systems and approaches to these practices.

For instance, a practice under Communicating Best Practices such as Ensure Communication Among Line and Staff Management is illustrated by a discussion of the various methods Wal-Mart uses to ensure corporate-wide communication (including Saturday morning executive meetings, and video links connecting all stores). At times, the corporate profiles will go into great depth and detail describing a benchmark company’s integrated approach to the subject area. Other times the profile will be brief and illustrate a single relevant practice. When relevant, the research team has developed tables and information graphics to visually illustrate key practice areas.

Research Sources Tables: Lastly, the report contains a Summary Table detailing the full extent of research sources employed to develop each set of benchmark profiles.
