This document provides a detailed overview of the March 2002 Global Benchmarking Council meeting, Cost Effective Knowledge Management. Members, speakers and invited guests addressed critical ideas such as value-driven KM, communities of practice, learning and innovation. Strategies and methods were discussed in allocating resources and making improvements based on the value of intangible assets.
Featured Case Studies included the following:
  • EDS offered its guide to structuring, measuring and utilizing intellectual capital.
  • Xerox recounted its success story of using communities of practice and improving internal sharing. After assessment and extensive research, they were able to build a framework and long-term strategy for KM.
  • IBM explained its ongoing efforts in using communities of practice in sustaining a knowledge-based business.
  • Microsoft's concern was getting to the core of intellectual capital. They introduced their model of assessing KM value through looking at the consistency and outcomes of behavior.
  • Buckman Laboratories shared how strengthening their KM led to increased performance on their online learning programs.
  • NCR focused on sharing knowledge, rather than measuring, as a way to keep the process simple, cost effective and personal.
  • AAA shared its benchmarking process in identifying successful strategies from other membership service companies. They needed to incorporate new sales techniques while maintaining quality service.
  • Lucent also shared their recent benchmarking success in increasing productivity by changing their output strategy.
