Shifting Healthcare Landscape has put Medical Science Liaisons in Key Role as Relationship Builder for Pharmaceutical Industry
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – February 3, 2012. Medical Science Liaisons have become a key link between the pharmaceutical industry and key stakeholders such as thought leaders that drive marketplace success. And the role of MSLs will grow even more in the coming years as the pharmaceutical industry relies on them to build relationships across a diverse set of customers.
A majority of 35 medical services leaders believe their MSL services will increase over the next two years, according to new research from research and consulting firm Best Practices, LLC. And a majority also said their company has changed – or will change - how their MSLs interact with KOLs,
"Medical Science Liaison Services Excellence: Generating Value for Diverse Customer Groups" explores how biopharma companies deliver exceptional MSL Services to various customer groups and stakeholders in an increasingly challenging business environment. The research also examined best practices in MSL management and creating value for diverse customer groups that include physicians, patients, payers, policy makers and advocates.
Given the expanding role of MSL groups and the challenging environment they face, it's critical for organizations to continually improve their MSL group's activities and services to ensure they are creating value for diverse customer groups. To meet this need, Best Practices, LLC conducted a comprehensive research study of the structure, management and services that are hallmarks of successful MSL groups.
Study objectives included:
- Explore the methods used by MSLs to serve stakeholders and build those stakeholder relationships.
- Identify roles, responsibilities and service levels provided to Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).
- Explore the ways through which MSLs provide services to KOLs. Determine frequency of services during pre- and post-approval stages.
This study is based on research and information provided by 35 pharmaceutical and medical device executives from 30 companies. The 145-page report provides two segments: the total benchmark class and U.S. only.
