STUDY OVERVIEW

In this new digital era, Medical Affairs organizations are now being asked to identify, engage and collaborate with a digitally oriented healthcare influencer: the Digital Opinion Leader (DOL). As a relatively new concept for most biopharma organizations, DOL engagement requires its own dedicated resources and structure.

Best Practices, LLC undertook this research to probe how Medical Affairs teams at biopharma companies can successfully identify, engage, and collaborate with Digital Online Influencers. The study benchmarks key aspects of an effective DOL engagement program, including program objectives and DOL team structure and staffing.

Benchmark data in this study is broken down into three different segments to provide deeper insights. Segmentations used in this study are as follows:

  • TBC (Total Benchmark Class) (includes all 40 survey respondents)
  • DOL Program Leaders (11 respondents)
  • DOL Program Majority (16 respondents)
  • DOL Program New-to-Space (13 respondents)

KEY TOPICS

  • Emerging Opportunities
  • Structure, Staffing and DOL Outreach in Medical Groups

KEY METRICS

  • How would you describe the maturity level of your DOL program?
  • What is the value of the DOL program to your organization?
  • What role do each of the listed groups play in managing the DOL engagement program and executing key activities?
  • How frequently does the medical DOL program team partner with other functions?
  • Approximately how many total internal FTEs support your DOL program?
  • What staff members are typically responsible for external engagement of DOLs?
  • Are your internal staff who are responsible for DOL engagement exclusively focused on that activity, or are they responsible for other forms of external engagement?

SAMPLE KEY FINDINGS

  • Program leadership: DOL programs are often initially led by Field Medical within New-to-Space companies. As the program grows, it tends to become more centralized and managed by the larger Medical Affairs organization. Finally, within DOL leaders company segment, Therapy Area teams lead DOL engagement programs, bring higher levels of talent and greater expertise specialization.
