STUDY OVERVIEW

In a dynamic era of evolving roles and responsibilities, MSLs need to keep up with a combination of traditional as well as virtual interactions to effectively engage with KOLs. In this new environment, it is challenging for field medical leaders to effectively gauge the performance of their teams.

Therefore, it is important to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure a sustainable culture of excellence within field medical teams.

Best Practices, LLC conducted benchmarking research to uncover current and emergent trends in the realm of virtual and hybrid MSL management. This study empowers field medical leaders to ensure access to key external experts and effectively measure and manage their teams' performance and impact.

KEY TOPICS

  • Field Challenges
  • KOL Access - Post Pandemic
  • Customer Engagement Preference
  • Proactive Outreach
  • F2F Meetings: Value and Ideal Mix

KEY METRICS

  • How would you rate the post-pandemic ability of MSLs to interact with KOLs and HCPs?
  • What do KOLs and HCPs prefer in terms of engagement and support?
  • Approximately how many KOLs are currently supported by an individual MSL of each type at benchmark organizations?
  • Approximately how many F2F and virtual meetings are asked of each MSL within the organization?
  • Percentage of proactive interactions
  • MSL proactivity index
  • Are F2F interactions assigned a higher value on MSL scorecard?
  • How many F2F meetings are targeted monthly?

SAMPLE KEY FINDINGS

  • Proactive outreach and product-specific discussion: On average, hybrid MSLs initiate 48% of KOL interactions, proactively discussing products in 53% of these interactions. This equates to a baseline “Proactive Product” outreach index of 25% of all interactions, or 4.6 F2F and 2.4 virtual Proactive Product engagements per MSL per month.

METHODOLOGY

Best Practices, LLC engaged 38 Field Medical and other Medical Affairs leaders from 30 biopharma organizations in this research through a benchmark survey. Deep-dive interviews were also conducted with field medical leaders at 12 organizations to capture additional insights.
