STUDY OVERVIEW

An effective Competitive Intelligence function is integral to meet the ever-growing challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. However, Competitive Intelligence leaders often face a balancing act between developing competent capabilities and managing limited resources.

Best Practices, LLC undertook this benchmarking research to identify how leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are improving the efficiency of their Competitive Intelligence function. In particular, this study delivers benchmarks and insights around key activities, budget, vendor management, training, capabilities, and use of Centers of Excellence.

KEY TOPICS

  • Competitive Intelligence Activities
  • Budget Coordination
  • Strengths and Weaknesses of Budget Model for Different Structures
  • Training and Capabilities
  • Use of Center of Excellence Model

KEY METRICS

  • Rank the listed activities in order of importance for optimal performance of Competitive Intelligence (CI) function
  • Where does the budget reside for CI activities?
  • Which of the listed qualifications does the current leader/head of your CI function possess?
  • Select top 3 most critical training topics for development of a strong CI staff
  • How often do you train your staff on CI guidelines?
  • Where does the Center of Excellence sit within the organization?

SAMPLE KEY FINDINGS

  • Competitive Intelligence Training: Both company size segments said distilling complex information and putting the pieces back together as a compelling story is the most critical training topic for development of a strong CI staff. Yet only 15% of the large company segment and 10% of the small-mid company segment said their CI team was “excellent” at doing this. Collaboration skills and recognizing useful intelligence were the second and third most important training topics for both segments.
