STUDY OVERVIEW

The launch landscape for new pharmaceutical products is characterized by growing competition in the market and tighter resources for pre-launch activities. Launching a new product in such a complex environment requires meticulous resource planning from the pre-launch phase to beyond market entry.

To help brand and marketing leaders in developing competitive staffing targets for launch and pre-launch activities, Best Practices, LLC undertook benchmarking research that probes current staffing allocations across the key activities required for a successful product launch.

In particular, this study benchmarks the FTE allocation for 12 key promotional, educational and market-access activities for the three years preceding launch, through launch year.

KEY TOPICS
  • Industry investments for new pharmaceutical product launch from 3 years prior to launch, through launch year
  • FTE allocated to key launch activities

KEY METRICS
  • Indicate total U.S. staffing investment for pre-launch activities for your product in the three years prior to the U.S. product launch
  • Cumulative launch staffing (in full time equivalents) by year
  • FTE allocation by function category (year – 3, year – 2, year – 1, and launch year)

SAMPLE KEY FINDINGS
  • The activities receiving the highest FTE allocation in Year – 3 and Year – 2 include Marketing activities related to launch, Medical Affairs (excluding Medical Science Liaisons) activities, and Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) activities.

METHODOLOGY

Best Practices, LLC engaged 48 marketing and commercial leaders from 38 leading pharmaceutical, biotech, and life sciences companies through a benchmarking survey instrument, capturing resourcing efforts from 51 product launches. More than 80% of the benchmark participants serve at the director level and above.
