In 1992, the Xerox Corporation conducted an extensive work-family initiative
and provided training for front-line managers on implementing flexible work
arrangements such as flextime and phased retirement. Human resources
representatives shared with managers a compelling rationale for the company’s
commitment to flexibility, as securing the buy-in of line managers is critical
to the success of a flexible work program.

Xerox Human Resources built a business case around flexibility, describing the
key benefit: increasing employee satisfaction and productivity. Managers
received a two-hour training module, and then human resources followed up six
months to two years later in order to determine the status of flexibility in
specific business areas.
