STUDY OVERVIEW

A key way to raise awareness and educate healthcare professionals about a pharmaceutical company's pipeline and products is to have an engaging medical booth presence at annual conferences. As part of their field work, MSLs are often the ones sharing medical information with physicians and KOLs attending these conferences.

Best Practices, LLC performed this research study to provide biopharma companies with current insights into what medical content MSLs are utilizing in the field, and the use of MSL receptions at congresses. This study also contains a chapter with narratives from deep dive executive interviews.

This study will allow pharma leaders who oversee or are involved with medical booth displays at congresses to compare the types of content their MSLs utilize with peer organizations.

This study contains segments for Hematology/Oncology and Non-Hematology/Oncology as well as Large and Small Companies.

KEY TOPICS

  • Medical Content Utilized by MSLs in the Field
  • Poster Book Utilization
  • MSL Receptions
  • Executive Narratives

SAMPLE KEY METRICS

  • What materials does your MSL team use in the field and is it shared proactively or reactively?
  • If your MSL utilizes poster books, how long do they present them for (in months) and is it shared proactively or reactively
  • Do your MSLs how receptions at congresses? Who can attend?

SAMPLE KEY FINDINGS

  • MSLs Across all Therapeutic Areas Generally Utilize the Same Medical Materials When in the Field: More than 70% of both segments use Poster Books, MoA Slide Decks & Video (both 2-D,3-D) and MoD Virtual Reality & Slide Decks.
  • For companies that permit their MSLs to use Poster Books, they allow them to present the books for 10 months, on average. The poster books are typically presented reactively, and they are from one congress and are presented without video/audio of the presenting author.
  • A majority of both segments do not have their MSLs host receptions at medical congresses.

METHODOLOGY

Best Practices, LLC engaged 21 Medical Affairs leaders at 20 pharmaceutical companies for this research project. In addition to utilizing a survey to collect quantitative data, the study included four executive interviews to collect qualitative data.
