Based on a survey of 65 diverse organizations, this 17-slide presentation shows how global companies with multiple business units consistently organize and coordinate new product development activities.

Key topic areas covered in this study include: organizational structures of global product development groups; division of responsibilities between central organizations and the local teams in each country; and measuring and managing results.

Trends identified in this study include:
1. Many companies have recently been experimenting structurally with centralization and decentralization of the product development department. Most companies have settled on a collaborative model with input from headquarters as well as regional or business units. Budget responsibility, however, tends to remain at the HQ level.
2. New product development departments are increasingly integrating customer input, customer feedback and customer needs into processes and operations. In fact, 88% of survey participants use customers as the main source of ideas for product development.
3. Companies that rely on employees to offer new product development ideas tend to compensate through non-monetary incentives like recognition and positive evaluations. However, more than a third of surveyed companies give monetary compensation for employees’ new product ideas. Only 18% of surveyed companies do not reward employees for new product ideas.

Product development teams can use this data to think critically about changes their product development organization has undergone or is undergoing.
